This is an in-camera double exposure (digital) I had made this past summer in the middle of drought. The water was so low the lily pads were wilting on dry land. I just came across this image when I was looking for a reference for something I am painting and I was struck by the environmental extremes that we all seem to be experiencing.

It’s just like a painting. Beautiful.
Thank you, David!
So much like a Monet painting! Had no idea that a digital double exposure was possible…must investigate….
Thanks, Scilla. It depends on the camera, I think. My camera allows me to do double and triple exposures and I must say the possibilities are fascinating!
What kind of camera do you have?
The camera that this was taken with is a Nikon D7000
Lovely, impressionistic. As mentioned above, reminds one of a painting.
Thank you, fotograffer!
What an impressionist artist you are, Karen!
🙂
I say the same for you, Marina! Thank you! =)
Impressionist, yes! Beautiful!
Thank you, Marija!
It is quite an irony isn’t it. Messy view of the environmental situation has been
superimposed on the sky and created rather pretty impressionistic image.
After all, nature is far more resilient than we think. —— next year you may
find the beautiful flowers there again.
This is very true, Yoshizen. You just don’t know how things will balance out. The river is now returned to normal water levels.
Thanks for your comment.
A masterful double ex. Karen. It reads just like a particularly good painting.
Well, it’s more just a lucky shot than anything, I think! It’s actually quite tricky doing double exposures and planning out how images might work together. Did you notice that what appears to be clouds in the sky are actually rocks? Thanks, Elena!
This is a beautiful image, and I don’t know why! I don’t think I would have recognised the lily pads without your guidance, but I certainly have a sense of abandonment and desolation – created, I think, by the long horizontals and the muted palette.
Your comment is interesting, Louis. I kind of like that you can’t really put your finger on what you see or like about it. Perhaps just sort of an impression in the layering…
Thanks!
Yes, as others have said, very impressionistic. and the letterbox layout adds to the Monet feel. Very nice,
Jim
Much thanks, Jim!
I don’t know how I missed this one while I was looking at your works earlier. I have to agree with other posts about the resemblance to the style of a Monet as this too was my first impression when I took a look at it for the first time. Although I haven’t taken a look at all of your work yet I’d have to say that this one is now my favorite piece. And I may add what I fine piece – very well done Karen! You are a master… I love it. Where can I view it in person?
Thank you, Chris. I haven’t actually tried printing this out yet. It might be kind of interesting really big. I’m hardly a master but thanks for the kind words – it’s more of a lucky shot!
Beautifully executed and very painterly, Karen. It reminds me of Pisarro’s work. Love it.
Thank you kindly, Richard. I got luck with this one, double exposures are really interesting but I haven’t felt I’ve done too many that are very successful – but I’ll keep trying!
Very well done Karen, I like this quite a bit.
Much thanks, Phil – glad you do!
Dang it. Everyone else already said “painterly”. So I’ll go with swevenly. I don’t know if my camera does the double ex, but I’m determined to find out.
“swevenly,” I like it! Thanks, Sara.
Did you figure out if you can do double exposures? Let me know if you manage it!
Wow! What a striking image. Lovely texture and color.
Lemony, thank you. The possibilities with layer textures with this technique is really interesting!
Yes, I also thought this was a painting….Monet..beautiful!
Thanks, Jennifer! =)
Turner meets Monet. Amazing. I have a dream house in my head and lately I have been mentally furnishing it with large canvases of all your latest efforts. This one is at the end of a wide hallway. 🙂 One day … !
Oh that’s terrific, Trish! Let me know when to deliver them, I’m dying to go to New Zealand! =)
Thank you, you are very kind!!
🙂
Gosh … sad lily pads. 😦 never seen that before … I wish you and everyone well with your crazy weather! 🙂
Ah, well the river has since returned to normal with the fall rains.
But it’s been an interesting year!
Wow. I can’t believe you did that with a digital camera. It’s like looking at a painting!
Fun with digital cameras! =) Thanks, Nareen. Truly, this was just a lucky shot…
Waouuuu wonderful !! (see comments above … I truly think the same 😉 )
Thanks for that, Mathias! =)
A nice reaction, glad you like it.
Gorgeous art, Karen!
Thanks, Ray!
beautiful. I love impressionist art and this is so reminiscent of it.
Thanks, Marina, there is potential to do some interesting things with double exposures.
Great effect.. I don’t think my Nikon D5100 allows such things… must have a look!
Yes, it’s a fun possibility! Thanks, Helen.
wow! such a painting..
Thanks, Cath.
It’s all been said. Stonking image Karen.
Stonking, that’s a word I don’t hear very often! Much thanks, Distan. =)
A lovely work of art. You can feel the dry despair of the lillies.
Yes, the river has since returned to normal levels, perhaps they will return in the spring! Thanks so much.
This is terrific. I have been wishing my camera allowed double exposures as there are some things I would like to try. Now I am wishing for this even harder. C’mon Canon – how about a firmware update to allow it, must be possible….
Oh it’s good fun, I’ve spent quite a bit of time over the summer experimenting but it’s going to take me awhile to get a good feel for it.
Here’s hoping you get a firmware update!
I am not holding my breathe:)
Maybe a new Nikon for Christmas…?
Well… I like my Canon. And, they don’t come cheaply.
This is the image that really set me wanting this feature – I saw it in the exhibit and was blown away. The photographer had two similar images, the other one I liked even better.

That image is very cool! So many possibilities…
Here’s the other one: http://bitly.com/RIUqLJ
Pretty sure it would make Pissarro and the impressionists smile…amazing shot!
Thank you, Apna. =)
Wow! That is a cool double.
I’m glad you think so, Michael. Thank you.
It almost looks like a water-color, Karen…very pretty.
I see Monet as well, and I’m intrigued by this digital double exposure technique.
VERY cool!
Wow, really beautiful!
Thank you, Sanne.
What more can I add – Superb……..
David.
Reminds me of the Impressionists…
This is definitely one of my favorites!
